Torterra (ドダイトス Dodaitosu?, Dodaitose in original Japanese language versions) are one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri.
Torterra are famous for being the final evolved form of one of the three species of Pokémon the player can choose at the start of their adventure in the Diamond and Pearl versions of the series. The purpose of Torterra in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]
The name Torterra is a portmanteau of the words tortoise and terra. Its Japanese name Dodaitose is a portmanteau of the Japanese words for foundation (土台 dodai?) and tortoise (トータス tōtasu?).

Biological characteristics
Torterra possesses a giant shell with a bonsai tree and three mountain peaks on its back, giving the impression that one is looking at a landscape from a distance. These Pokémon are peaceful in nature and enjoy being with others of its own kind. It does not like to fight. Because of this appearance, there are occasions when small Pokémon will gather and build nests on the shell of a stationary Torterra. When Torterra do move, they often move in herds in search of water. These herds give the impression of a moving forest. Some say an earthquake hatched them out from the earth.
Its appearance is very similar to that of an Ankylosaurus, snapping turtle, giant tortoise or even the mythical Genbu. It has two large horns on either side of its head. It also has four huge and strong legs. Its tall and large appearance makes it look fierce. Its appearance is a reference toward the Iroquois creation myth, where the world is created by various animals on a turtle's back.
In the video games
Torterra was introduced in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl as the final evolution of Turtwig. It was the first Pokémon to be revealed with the Grass- and Ground-type combination.
Torterra evolves from Grotle at level 32 and can learn the Earthquake move immediately; a reflection of its new Grass- and Ground-type combination, something its previous evolutions notably lacked. Its stats, overall, are considered to be average. However, its Speed stat is the lowest of all twelve final starter Pokémon evolutions.
If Torterra has a high happiness rating, a Move Tutor in Sinnoh will offer to teach it the move Frenzy Plant, an exclusive move shared with Venusaur, Meganium, and Sceptile (in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, Chikorita can be obtained with the move as well). Torterra is classified as the Continent Pokémon, a classification shared with Groudon.
In the Trading Card Game
There are currently no Torterra cards available outside of Japan. However, two Torterra cards are yet to be released outside of Japan:
- Diamond & Pearl, as Torterra Lv.45, a Grass-type holographic card (#17)
- Diamond & Pearl, as Torterra Lv.X, a Grass-type Pokémon Lv.X card
