Torrington Football Club was formed around 1908, when the Parish Church ran a team, and they joined the Town Club. The Great War years intervened, but the Club soon re-established itself, and were the first team to win the Hansen Cup in 1919/20, beating Bideford 1-0 with Roy Parnell scoring the only goal. A year later they won the Westward Ho! Cup beating Hansen's Shipyard with again Roy Parnell netting the only goal. That final attracted a crowd of 5000, which was common place in those days for local cup finals. During that time Torrington competed in the North Devon League.
