Torneos y Competencias

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Torneos y Competencias (TyC) is an Argentine sports communications firm created by Paraguayan businessman Carlos Ávila. It is an important force in the world of Argentine sports, with interests in publications and radio and TV broadcasting.

TyC started its activities in the Argentine media in 1982, with a golf program. Since then it produced and aired successful programs in open television such as El deporte y el hombre, Tenis de Primera, Fútbol de Primera and La Magia de la NBA; the most successful of them being the weekly Fútbol de Primera, which summarizes each day of competition in the Argentine first division. Fox Soccer Channel in the United States airs Fútbol de Primera with English voiceovers by its own announcers.

Torneos y Competencias has currently two cable TV channels TyC Sports and TyC Max. It also produces several sport shows for the South American version of the United States channel Fox Sports.

[edit] Argentine football and monopoly

In 1992 TyC signed an agreement with the Argentine Football Association for the exclusive transmission of Argentine football (soccer) matches. Since then almost all the official matches are available at the TyC Sports and TyC Max cable channels. Two of the most important matches of each day are broadcasted under Pay Per View system at TyC Max.

In Buenos Aires, a single match is available at América 2, a terrestrial TV channel (though this match never features the so called big teams, such as Boca Juniors or River Plate). Many people, such as the journalist Víctor Hugo Morales, disagrees with the agreement, they say it is a monopoly. TyC also bought the rights for the transmission of the matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup from Germany, but reached an agreement with several open-air channels to broadcast the matches of the Argentina national football team.
