The local wildlife is very varied, basically ranging from local birds to animals like fish's maw, foxes and roe deer. Rabbits are not uncommon, and obviously domestic pets like dogs. Badgers have been sighted, as well as rats, and small ferrets and weasels, as well as the occasional squirrel. There have also been one or two reports of adders.
Torbothie is populated generally by mixed class families, with a few exceptions. Its culture is very mixed. Several kinds of people can be found, of varying ethnic background, but the majority is white, Scottish. The accent is varied Edinburgh-Glasgow, resembling a toned-down Glasgow accent. The youth culture in Shotts isn't very mixed. While a small majority favour different tastes in music, clothing, hairstyles, and lifestyle, the majority are referred to as 'neds', which means Non-Educated-Delinquents.
[edit] Torbothie Beach
Torbothie Beach is a local name for The Voe, a 2-acre-sized man-made body of water situated near the Torbothie Club, and next to a quarry. It was created by damming the upper Calder water to create a source of cooling for the now-demolished Shotts ironworks and Brass foundry. Abandoned and ruined stone structures are dotted around it and it is suitable for fishing (Pike and Perch). Young people often take their bikes down there for fun, and it is not unusual to find someone around or near Torbothie Beach. It is currently believed to be undergoing a makeover with 430 houses planned for its periphery.
