[edit] Plot Summary

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

While working late at his office, Judge Wigzell is suddenly interrupted by the Joker, who busts into his room and encases the judge in a giant playing card by using a specialized gun. When detectives Bennett and Yin are called to the scene, they find the judge, still frozen in the card, in his office, but before they can act on it, a rope strung around the card pulls tight, revealing to the detectives that the card is tied to a small car, being driven by the Joker. Joker pulls out of the building, dragging the judge behind him in the card, and speeds over the bridge as Batman arrives and pursues after the maniacal jester.

When the Joker gets away, Batman decides to check out Joker’s last known hideout. Sure enough, Joker attacks him, using a brutal pogo-stick that doubles as a gun. As Batman finally corners the Joker, he tries to get him to talk, and when he grabs him, he notices that the villain is wearing face paint - unlike the Joker, who has bleached white skin. Removing the face pieces that made up the Joker mask, Batman quickly learns that the impostor is in fact a guard from Arkham, doing dirty work for Joker, who Batman discovers is still locked up in his cell. The guard then picks up the gun and fires it at Batman, only to discover that it was rigged by the Joker to instead encase the impostor in his own card. Batman leaves the guard at the abandoned factory to visit the Joker in Arkham Asylum.

Once he arrives, he and the Joker have a conversation, at which time Joker escapes his binds and flees from his cell, leaving Batman alone in the locked up cell. A guard walking by notices Batman, and immediately runs and calls the police.

Meanwhile, Yin and Bennett, as well as the head of security at Arkham, all get an invitation to a theatre. Yin and Bennett decide that they will attend, knowing from the invitation that they’ll find the missing judge. Before they get to the theatre, however, they here a report over the police radio about Batman being locked in a cell at Arkham. Before they arrive, Batman uses the supplies hidden in one of the padded cushions of Joker’s cell to disguise himself in the straight-jacket as the Joker, leaving Yin and Bennett to believe that the guard was just pranking them. The two detectives leave to the theatre while the guard walks into the cell to tranquilize the disguised Batman, but gets locked into the cell instead as Batman escapes, heading straight for the theatre that he overheard Yin and Bennett discussing.

When the two detectives arrive, Joker pops out and surprises them, knocking them out. When they awake, they are in the crumbling, dilapidated theatre, their feet stuck to the floor as it would be in a movie theatre. With them, several other people are present, all stuck in their seats as well, while Joker appears on the stage to reveal his plan: He’s going to use his weapon to encase all of the 52 people found responsible for Joker’s lockup in Arkham in the large cards, and drop the oversized cards into Gotham Bay, like a sick game of 52 pick-up.

Batman shows up, as always, and he and Joker have a fierce battle up and down the stage, up into the catwalks, etc. In the end, Joker returns to his gun, and attempts to blast a beam at Batman, but the nozzle is disrupted, sending it whirling back at Joker, who is then encased in a card of his own, ready to be returned to Arkham.

Spoilers end here.
