A Topit is a utility device used by magicians.

It is commonly sewn into a coat or jacket and is not visible to the viewing audience... essentially, the value of the device lies in the audience's lack of awareness regarding the device itself. The device is essentially a very large pouch, the bottom of which tucks into the waistband of the performer's trousers, creating a catching device. As such, the performer can toss items into this pouch silently and covertly. The performer can later reach into his/her jacket pocket, in plain view, and retrieve the item(s), creating limitless possibilities while performing.

Topits were originally employed and supposedly invented by shoplifters. Some shoplifters today still use them. The art of using a Topit has developed, like other forms of magic, in symbiotic relationship between magicians and grifters, both considered sleight of hand artists.
