The Reproductive system' of an organism is the name given to the apparatus directly involved in reproduction. The reproductive systems of taxonomically remote organisms exhibits enormous diversity--Plants and Animals being the most familiar examples. Animals produce a zygote, which is usually diploid, by the union of haploid gametes: sperm and ovum (or egg) cells from two organisms.
A sex organ, or primary sexual characteristic, narrowly defined, is any of those parts of the body (which are not always bodily organs according to the strict definition) which are involved in sexual reproduction and constitute the reproductive system in an complex organism; namely:
- Male: penis (notably the glans), testicles, scrotum, prostate, seminal vesicles, epididymis, Cowper's glands
- Female: vulva (notably the clitoris), vagina (notably the cervix), labia, uterus, Fallopian tubes, ovaries, Skene's glands, Bartholin's glands.
