Police Constable Tony Stamp is a popular fictional character in the long-running British ITV Drama The Bill. He has been in the show since 1987. His callsign is '595'. He is portrayed by Graham Cole.
Tony has always been a fundamentally decent person; recently he took on a second job as a taxi driver to fund his father's care. He is considered to be one of the most popular characters with the real police. A real police commissioner even once offered Graham Cole an application form to join the force.[citation needed]
Tony was recently at the centre of a storyline concerning allegations of police brutality. Because PC Yvonne Hemmingway was already under suspension and facing a murder trial for killing a thug with her ASP, Tony hesitated before using his own ASP when confronted by some youths and in that split second they launched a vicious assault on him that left him fighting for his life. Yvonne was later acquitted.
A few years ago, Tony was the subject of an accusation of sexual harassment from a young lad called Lee Dwyre. The allegations were false, but the longevity of the investigation, and the public's reaction to the possibility left him reeling. It also damaged his hitherto unbroken friendship with Jim Carver.
Earlier Tony was on trial for vehicular manslaughter, after accidentally killing a pedestrian in a car chase. He was given a suspended sentence, but lost his position as driver of Sun Hill's patrol car.
Tony has been as happy as a P.C. for over twenty years, preferring what he considers the real work of directly catching criminals. He is strong, so other officers are happy to have him watching their backs.
Tony's position has recently been threatened by his new boss Superintendent John Heaton. He assigned Tony and Reg Hollis to investigate a case concerning a missing dog. Tony and Reg however proved their worth when they uncovered a murder that had previously been undetected and arrested the culprit.
