Tony Ocasio

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tony Ocasio (born c. 1967) is a Puerto Rican who was a famous singer. He was a member of boy band Los Chicos.

Ocasio came to fame during the early 1980s, when Carlos Alfonso (better known as "Titi Soto") created the band, to rival Edgardo Diaz's Menudo. Tony, as he was better known by his fans, was considered by some fans to be the group's leader. He had, however, Chayanne as a bandmate, which, it can be said, made school girls in Puerto Rico have daily, friendly debates about which one of the two was the best looking member of the music band.

During 1983, year in which Menudo released the Una Aventura Llamada Menudo movie, Los Chicos were coincidentally also enjoying one of their most productive years, and Tony Ocasio along with the rest of the band became well known across Central and South America as well as the Caribbean. In Puerto Rico particularly, his face was seen commonly in such items as school notebooks, pencils, posters and other things; as well as in the corresponding show business magazines, such as Vea, Teve Guía, Artistas, Estrellita and others. He also participated in the film, Coneccion Caribe (alongside the rest of the band and Otilio Warrington), and in a WAPA-TV television show where Los Chicos sang on Sundays.

Despite Los Chicos' success in Latin America, the band soon separated. Although the group's members were still clearly remembered by their fans during early 1984 (period during which the band was still, officially, together), the group did not manage to record new albums. On August of that year, after many months of rumors both by the Puerto Rican media and by the public, Carlos Alfonso held a press conference with Tony, Chayanne and the rest of the band by his side. They all got a chance to speak and express their feelings before the official announcement of the band's breakup was made.

Los Chicos fans and Puerto Ricans in general as well felt that either Tony or Chayanne were the most likely ones to succeed in show business as solo singers. It was the latter, however, that went on to become an international singer, as Tony eventually faded out and retired from music.

Currently, there is a number of Los Chicos-dedicated websites on the Internet, many of which have webmasters that remember Tony with fondness.
