Tony Nicholson

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An ebullient fast medium bowler for his beloved Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Tony Nicholson took 879 first class wickets in 283 games at the remarkably low average of 19.76. With a best of 9 for 62, an economy rate of 2.19 and a strike rate of a wicket every 54 balls it is a mystery why this burly seamer never appeared at test level in seaming English conditions. He took a further 173 wickets in 120 one day matches at just 17.05 apiece.

Born Anthony George Nicholson on June 25, 1938 in Dewsbury, Yorkshire he made his debut in 1962, won his cap in 1963 and played his last game in 1975 before dying, aged just 47, on November 4th 1985 in Harrogate, Yorkshire.

A man who knew how to enjoy himself off the field of play and a hard competitor on it, it's a mark of his enduring popularity that the Yorkshire Players Association hold a Tony Nicholson Memorial Trophy golf day in his honour.
