He began making an impact at the Sharks in 2006 after several years at the club working his way up through the junior ranks. Tony played the early part of the season in the Sharks premier league side where he scored eleven tries nearly averaging a try per match. After the subsequent sacking of Tevita Latu after an off-field incident Caine was called up to replace him in the Sharks squad for their round twelve clash with the New Zealand Warriors. Caine made his debut replacing starting hooker Kevin Kingston and showed signs of playing well before disaster occurred when he attempted a kick in play and was charged down by Warriors prop Steve Price resulting in Caine sustaining injury tearing his anterior and lateral ligament, partially ripping his posterior ligament while also tearing the calf muscle away from the bone[1].
