Brackens attended Fairfield High School in Fairfield, Texas and was a letterman in football and track & field. In football, he won All-Class 3A State honors, and finished his senior season with 18 sacks and 120 tackles on defense. In track & field, he won the State Title in the shot put. He played against the likes of Brian Lawson who is now coaching football in the state of Texas.

He played his college football at the University of Texas (Longhorns) where he earned a reputation as a fleet footed hitter.

He was taken in the second round of the 1996 NFL draft and played his entire professional career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was released in 2004 after a series of troubling leg injuries and operations. His reputation as a hard hitting defensive end continued. He played through difficult injuries and earned the respect and admiration of his coaches, peers and fans.
