Tommy Vickers

Tommy Vickers was an African-American who died in April 1972 while in custody of Lake County, FL Sheriff Department. Vickers was from South Florida and received a ticket while passing through Lake County. When the deadline for payment passed, McCall sent a deputy to South Florida to arrest Vickers and bring him back to Lake County. According to the St. Petersburg Times, Vickers was mentally retarded. Sheriff Willis V. McCall was indicted and suspended from office by then-Governor Reubin Askew. McCall was accused of kicking Vickers to death in a holding cell for not passing a beverage cup back to one of his guards. McCall was acquitted by an all-white jury in Ocala, FL after napping and doing crossword puzzles in court during the trial.
