Tommerup municipality

Tommerup municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Funen County in central Denmark. The municipal covers an area of 74 km², and has a total population of 7,865 (2006). Its mayor is Finn Brunse, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.

The municipality's main city and the site of its municipal council is Tommerup.

Neighboring municipalities are Odense to the east and northeast, Vissenbjerg to the north, Aarup and Glamsbjerg to the west, and Broby to the south.

The municipality was created in 1970 due to a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that combined the following parishes;

  • Broholm Parish
  • Brylle Parish
  • Tommerup Parish
  • Verninge Parish

By January 1, 2007 Tommerup municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will merged with existing Haarby, Glamsbjerg, Assens, Aarup and Vissenbjerg municipality to form a new Assens municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 513 km² and a total population of 41,201 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Syddanmark ("South Denmark Region").

On the area of Tommerup municipality there is Tommerup transmitter, whose guyed mast is the tallest construction of Denmark (expect Greenland).
