Tomkins

Tomkins plc is a British based engineering company headquartered in west London. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. It is also listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
Tomkins was founded in 1925 as F.H. Tomkins Buckle Company, a small manufacturer of buckles and fasteners. In the 1980s and 1990s it became a conglomerate, with interests in industries from food to armaments. In 1998 it decided to streamline and it sold many of its businesses over the next few years. It now has two business groups:
- Industrial and automotive: the larger business, producing products primarily for the automotive industry.
- Building products: produces air systems components such as grills and diffusers, and a variety of other products including pipes, baths and windows.
The majority of Tomkin's sales are made in the United States. Turnover for the 52 weeks ended 1 January 2005 was £2,980.3 million. Profits were £223.4 million before tax and £180.9 million after tax.
Companies formerly owned by Tomkins include Smith and Wesson and RHM.
