Tomari

Tomari (Russian: Томари) is a coastal town in Sakhalin Oblast, Russia, located on the western coast of Sakhalin 167 km north-west of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk at 47.7658° N 142.0683° E. Population: 5,338 (2002 Census); 8,121 (1989 Census).

Founded in 1870. Along with the rest of the southern portion of Sakhalin, it belonged to Japan in 1905–1945, at which time it bore the name of Tomarioru. It was reverted to the Soviet Union in 1945 and granted town status and renamed Tomari in 1946.
