From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas "Tom" McGroarty is an American Democratic Party politician who served as the mayor of the city of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania from 1997 to 2003.

[edit] Accomplishments

Mayor McGroarty implemented a program for the Susquehanna River feature a landing spot at the Irem Temple Shrine in the City Center without much success. He also pushed forward a major recycling/trash clean-up project which had quite satisfactory results. However, the mayor's six-year tenure will largely be remembered for his ineffectiveness in turning around the city's economic situation and his failure to revive downtown Wilkes-Barre. Plans for a movie theater will never fully materalized until his successor took office.

[edit] Post-Mayor

Today, according to the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader newspaper, McGroarty is working in the Pennsylvania Health Department Office of Emergency Medical Services. He claims he sought a civil service-related occupation after losing the Democratic primary to Tom Leighton. McGroarty scored 96 out of 100 points on the civil service test required for such a position.
