Dr. Tom Hayhurst is a retired pulmonologist, current Fort Wayne City Councilman and the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for the third congressional district in Indiana He did both his undergraduate and doctoral work at the Bloomington campus of Indiana University. He is a veteran from the Vietnam War era, having served in Michigan as a doctor in the United States Air Force.

[edit] Community involvement
Hayhurst helped open the Matthew 25 Pulmonary Clinic in Fort Wayne and works at the Allen County Tuberculosis Clinic. He also co-founded Veterans for Better Health Care, an advocacy organization in Northeast Indiana, in response to the proposed closing of the Fort Wayne VA hospital. He remains an active member of the organization.
[edit] 2006 Congressional campaign
Hayhurst won the Democratic primary election over Rev. Kevin Boyd on 2 May 2006. Hayhurst raised $508,182 and contributed $200,000 of his own money to his campaign[1]. Hayhurst was defeated by Rep. Mark Souder in the November 2006 general election, 54%-46%. Hayhurst won the City of Fort Wayne but lost to Souder in all the district's rural counties.
Whilst Hayhurst has not ruled out running for Congress in 2008, he filed a report with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) terminating his campaign committee on 29 December 2006.

Hayhurst announced at a 9 January 2006, press conference that he would not seek reelection to his Fourth District city council seat, which had been enlargened during an annexation process to include the largely Republican area of Aboite.
