Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Tom Cotton is the father of Rose Cotton. He liked Samwise Gamgee, and wanted his daughter to marry the loyal gardener.

Tom also befriended Meriadoc Brandybuck, Peregrin Took and Frodo Baggins after the War of the Ring during the Scouring of the Shire: the Cotton farm was the base of operations for the Hobbits' war against the Ruffians who had overrun the Shire.

Tom fought in the Battle of Bywater, defeating many Ruffians. Tom was most likely a Gardner.
