Tokyo Police Club is a Canadian indie rock band from Newmarket, Ontario, consisting of vocalist and bassist Dave Monks, guitarist Josh Hook, keyboardist Graham Wright and drummer Greg Alsop.
TPC formed in 2005 while playing for fun in a basement after the four had disbanded from a previous group they had been playing in. From here they started to gain attention and played some small shows throughout the Toronto area. With a buzz forming in Montreal TPC was asked to play in the Pop Montreal festival and soon after they signed with Toronto label Paperbag Records.
The band released its debut EP, A Lesson In Crime, in 2006 on Paper Bag Records. They recently appeared on the Edgefest bill in the summer of 2006, and toured both Canada and the United States. They also appeared on the inaugural Osheaga Festival bill in September 2006. In April 2007, they will perform at the Coachella music festival in Indio, California.
Rolling Stone recently declared Tokyo Police Club to be the best "neo-punk post-anti-rock (circa 73) since the Pavement (Matador Records) reissue of Wowee Zowee."[citation needed]
Responding to criticisms that their debut EP A Lesson in Crime is too short (16:22), keyboardist/vocalist Graham Wright had this to say in an interview with Ukula:
- "It's very quick, quick, quick, one, two, three. Some of the songs don't have a lot of space in them and the album doesn't have a whole lot of room to breathe, but I think in the case of an EP this is a really good thing." [1]
On a March 24th gig at Nashville's "MERCY LOUNGE", Theband's drummer took sick, forcing the band to play an acoustic set, until all eight members of touring mates "Delta Spirit" and "Cold War Kids" took the stage with them, for a never before seen eleven member Tokyo Police Club improv show.
