Tokyo Gakugei University

Tokyo Gakugei University (東京学芸大学) or Gakudai (学大), for short, is a national university in Koganei, Tokyo. Its name literally means Tokyo University of Liberal Arts and it was established in 1949 through the merging of four of Tokyo’s most prominent teacher-training institutions, including one that may be traced to 1873. Over the past 50 years, Tokyo Gakugei University has developed a solid reputation in Japan as a leading public university for teacher training and educational research.

In 1966 the Graduate School of Tokyo Gakugei University was established, and since 1996 it has offered Doctoral degrees in the education field as the flagship campus in a coalition of educational institutions that include Chiba University, Saitama University, and Yokohama National University. Tokyo Gakugei University's contributions are especially recognized in such fields as Japanese language teaching, science education, art education, music education, and multicultural/international education, all areas in which its courses are among the finest in Japan.

In recent years, Tokyo Gakugei University has developed innovative programs to better accommodate professional school teachers, including evening and short-term courses. The university also houses a number of national research centres in education-related fields. Its campus is situated in an attractive suburb, about 20 minutes by express train from downtown Tokyo, and it also maintains a number of attached public schools (offering innovative curricula in elementary, secondary, and special education) at various locations in the greater Tokyo area.
