[edit] Playing career

Dodge played quarterback at Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Texas and helped guide the Yellow Jackets to the 1980 Class 5A state championship game against Permian High School. Although Dodge and the Yellow Jackets lost the game, Dodge still had a very successful season and became the first Texas high school quarterback to pass for 3,000 yards in a season.

Dodge went on to play quarterback at the University of Texas at Austin under coach Fred Akers. Dodge ranks ninth on the UT all-time passing list (2,791 yards) and stands ninth in TD passes (18). His 359 passing yards in Texas' 44-16 win over Rice in 1985 stood as the Longhorn single-game record for 13 years before James Brown broke it with a 397-yard passing day against Texas Tech in 1997. Dodge's passing effort currently ranks third on the UT single-game chart.

[edit] High school coaching career

Dodge is regarded as one of the nation’s most successful high school football coaches for his winning records at Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas. Dodge amassed a 98-11 record overall at Carroll from when he took over in 2000. During the first five years that Carroll had been designated a Class 5A high school, Dodge compiled a staggering 79-1 record, while winning four Texas 5A state championships (the only loss was by one point versus Katy High School in the 2003 state final). Carroll was also recognized as national champions by USA Today in 2004 and 2006, and by PrepNation.com in 2005. Dodge was named National Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports in 2004 and by USA Today in 2005.

Dodge served as offensive coordinator at Rockwall and McKinney High Schools before taking over at Carroll. While coaching quarterbacks at Rockwall, he helped lead the Yellow Jackets to an appearance in the state title game. He also helped McKinney reach the state quarterfinals in 1991. After his stint at North Texas, Dodge served as head coach at Cameron’s C.H. Yoe High School from 1994-96.

Dodge was hired on December 12, 2006 to become the new head football coach at the University of North Texas, replacing former coach Darrell Dickey, who was fired on November 8 after going 3-9 in 2006.[2] Dodge hopes to revive a program that had won four straight Sun Belt Conference Championships from 2001-2004, but has struggled as of late. Dodge previously served on the North Texas coaching staff from 1992-1993 as the offensive coordinator. During his tenure he directed the Mean Green offense to a per-game average of 348 yards and 26 points.
