[edit] History
Operation survival that was the main ambition for Trinidad and Tobago Premier League side Tobago United. Since they joined the league in 2003, Tobago United have had extremely unhappy times: they finished bottom in seasons 2003, 2004, 2005 and in 2006. With the expansion of the League in 2006, the bottom two placed teams will be relegated to the second tier.
[edit] Season 2006
Peter Granville, the head coach of the side is hoping that his team can avoid relegation. He demonstrated his support: "As a club we've been making small progress over the last couple of years and I seriously believe we can stay up. I know everyone will believe we're relegation contenders but we're going to pull off some surprises".
United have had a good pre-season with a massive six weeks of and their preparation is believed to be in great form.
He told main officials: "I am very happy with what I've saw all the boys are committed lads. There is also serious competition for places".
"Our mission is clear we must work on a shoe-string budget but this year we will make some big strides I would believe". But he knows that a repeat of last season could bring serious implications on the manager. On this situation he said at a press conference: "Yes, we finished last season bottom of the table. But we took points of every team bar W Connection (the champions) and runners-up San Juan Jabloteh".
The former National under-20 coach is not getting ahead of himself, he says, “I know that it is going to be extremely difficult for us to win the League, that sort of success does not happen overnight—but at this stage of Tobago United’s development, winning the league is not our mandate—our mandate at this time is to ensure we give a good and strong performance, giving a good account of ourselves and of course avoid relegation at all costs and if we achieve that we would have won.”
This year Tobago united will be fielding two young Nigerian players, a utility player by the name of Ollattunji Quadri and Abdullahi Aminu s a big strong defender—they have also attracted Caledonia AIA’s Dale Simon and Handell Manswell both Tobago born players who have returned home this season.
