[edit] Inclusion of an External Link
Hello,
My name is Jenny Clark, I'm the Webmaster of a Tobin Bell site called It's a Tobin thing - www.itsatobinthing.com
I have been trying to inlcude my link on the Tobin Bell page here for quite some time with no success - each time I try and add it, it gets deleted. I was told this was because it is a "fansite" and that evil fansites are frowned upon. I was then told to present my case here if I felt this was unfair.
This is why I feel this is unfair:
You guys have a link up to a Tobin Interview right now, correct? All right, on It's a Tobin thing we have a collection of 30 interviews - a collection that grows continuously. You guys have one picture of Tobin up right now - It's a Tobin thing has close to 1000 screen captures and photos.
Not only this, we have information about Tobin - a trivia page, if you will - one that far exceeds the one found on IMDb (another link you currently have up).
We also have a detailed filmography - the majority of the films not only have his role and a summary (as seen on IMDb) - they also have pictures of his character in various scenes.
All of this is just the tip of the iceberg. I understand wikipedia believes that all fansites are the devil - this is both charming and fascinating, but I assure you that every piece of information that goes up on It's a Tobin thing is checked and checked again, and that if a mistake is ever made it is corrected immediately and announced.
I ask you to please consider its inclusion. If you would like to see into the Member Areas that contain the majority of the interviews and pictures to see if I'm lying - please contact me at: jdclar@wm.edu - I will gladly set up a temporary account for you to sign into and see for yourself.
My many thanks for your time and consideration, Jenny Clark
- Please see WP:EL. Adding a link to a site you own and maintain not withstanding, there are also other problems. The accessibility of much of the purported information is severely limited, and even if you allow select users to temporarily access the material, this is still not sufficient for the general audience. And, while the interview link on the article is done by a reputable source (MTV), an unofficial fansite, no matter how factually accurate it claims to be, is not considered reputable. Granted, a link to a major fansite may be appropriate, but I don't see any reason for it in this case. Nufy8 20:26, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
Reply: Look, I'm not trying to start an argument - but this is a major fansite - I dare anyone out there to find one that even remotely comes close. I'm not saying that to sound arrogant, I'm saying it because it's true - I've put (and do put) an extreme amount effort into making this website the best it can be. I am simply asking for it to be respected as such, especially when something like IMDb - a source that is known for having errors all the time is linked with no problem whatsoever.
As for the majority of the interviews and pictures not being easily accessible - first of all, membership is free. Secondly, there is a specific section explaining that - if you join and you don't like what you see, or for whatever other reason you wish to leave - all you have to do is email the webmaster and your account will be deleted within 24 hours.
As for me trying to add the link myself - look, I'm not trying to spam you guys, I'm just trying to put one link to a site up. You want me to ask a member of mine if he/she would mind doing it instead, fine, I'll do that, but y'all are going to give them the same run around. I figured I might as well take the heat.
There's this line from the link you mentioned: "Fanlistings are generally not informative and should not ordinarily be included." - ok, once again, this fansite is informative, and frankly, to generalize fansites like that is wrong. I admit - some have issues, but to label all of them in that demeaning, let's-roll-our-eyes-randomly sort of way is really not cool.
There's also the fact that this site is written in English - another plus according to wiki's rules (even tho that in itself isn't pc... : \ - y'all are just pissin' everybody off)
I sound frustrated, don't I? Well, that's probably because I am. However, I'm not trying to upset anyone, I'm really not, so if I have, I apologize. I'm simply asking for this big, informative, accurate, friendly, original Tobin Bell fansite to get some respect from you guys just as it has from various other sites.
Very best, and my apologies if I sounded harsh. Jenny Clark 11/16/06 4:37pm est
- I don't doubt that you've put a lot of effort into the site, and nor do I wish to sound like I don't respect it, but I just don't see a good reason to include it when you consider the guidelines and policies that Wikipedia stresses. The free membership may loosen up restrictions, but nevertheless, some are still present. That's not really the biggest problem I see, however. Although you may disagree with the fact that fansites are dubious and shouldn't be included, one of Wikipedia's core policies requires sources of information to be reputable and verifiable. Fansites aren't considered either. Again, you may not agree, but this is what's been established. My biggest concern is the site will be used as a source of information, which, as explained above, is greatly advised against. Granted, not all external links are used as sources of information, but I have a feeling some users will think it is. Finally, to quote WP:EL, "If there are many fansites for the topic covered by the article, then providing a link to one major fansite (and marking the link as such) may be appropriate."
Reply: I appreciate your response and your candor, and I respect that y'all have guidelines. The last thing I just want to say is - you said your biggest concern is that people would use it as a source of information. Well, lol, I suppose you could say your biggest concern is one of my biggest hopes. One of the main reasons I created the site was to let people know about him, give information, ect - that's precisely why I'm so hard on myself and my members when it comes to accurate reporting and representaion.
In any event, I'm not going to cause anymore ruckus (at least on this topic : P), I'll let this go.
Best regards, Jenny Clark 8:17pm est
[edit] Seinfeld?
Who did he play on Seinfeld? Its not on the filmography.
In the episode with the old man where Kramer is selling the old man's records, i believe he is the record store owner. Paradoxombie 17:55, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- Paradoxombie is right. He was the record shop guy in a moderately funny episode called "The Old Man." See [2] for more info. --The Fat Man Who Never Came Back 18:00, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
