TMCR 87.9

In the summer of 2005 a new Community Radio station was opened in Thorne, near Doncaster. Serving the communities of Thorne and Moorends on 87.9FM, it was a trial run to test how this would be received by the local community. Supported by Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, and with financial backing through the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, a four week period on-air was run from a studio in Thorne.
The station was staffed by people from the local area, and presenters from several hospital radio stations, such as Trust AM providing a 24 hours a day service to the community.
After the live broadcasts the station re-opened to provide training in the media for volunteers who wish to be involved in the long term running of the radio station. However, due to lack of funding, the doors closed at the end of February 2006 although meetings are being held fortnightly.
The station is run by a committee of local people and a team of volunteers. There are plans to make further short term broadcasts. If all the license applications go according to plan, the station will return to the airwaves early in 2007.
