Thomas Almuttil son of Thomas and Annama Mathew was born in India on August 11th 1964. He received his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Mysore University in 1986. The same year he joined TATA Robinson Frazer as a Shift Supervisor involved in the manufacturing of high end TATA trucks. In 1988 he left TATA Robinson to join National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) a Government Of India subsidiary as an Assistant Engineer. While working there he prepared for GRE and TOEFL exam. In 1989 he successfully passed the two exams with very high scores. After he received his scores he applied to various schools in USA to purse his Masters degree. He got admission to Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia with full scholarship. In August of 1989, he left India and came to USA to puse his goals. He completed his Masters in Mechanical Engineering in 1992 and later that year joined the Ph.D program. His advisor at ODU was Dr. Surender N. Tiwari. He worked on a project funded by NASA Langley which was administered by Dr. Robert E. Smith. Dr. Smith (Retired now) was then the Asistant head at Geometric Lab (GEOLAB). In 1994 Thomas Almuttil retured to India and got married to Leena Mathew. Both of them returned to USA the same year and lived in Bolling square Apartments, Norfolk, VA. While at NASA, Thomas Almuttil published various technical papers some of which are;

He completed his Ph.D in 1996 and joined Bell Labrotaries (AT&T). Later that year Bell Labs sponsored Dr. Thomas Almuttil for a green card under exceptional candidate status which he received the following year. In 2002 he left Bell Labs to join a startup company called Tellium. After a successful IPO in 2004 Tellium was bought by Zhone technologies. In December of 2004 he bacame an Amercan citizen. In August of 2005 Dr. Thomas Almuttil left Zhone to join Lockheed Martin Corporation where he is currently working. Dr. Thomas Almuttil and Leena Mathew have two sons George Thomas and John Thomas.
