Tlalnepantla de Baz is a city and municipality located in the State of México. It is an important industrial suburb of the Mexico City metropolitan area. It lies in two sections near the northern tip of the Federal District (Distrito Federal) of Mexico. The city had an official 2005 census population of 674,417 (the fourth-largest city in the state), while the municipality had a population of 683,808. The municipality has an area of 83.48 km² (32.23 sq mi) and also includes the town of Tepeolulco Puerto Escondido.

[edit] About the Name

The official name is: Tlalnepantla de Baz. The first word: Tlalnepantla comes from the nahuatl words tlalli (earth) and nepantla (in the middle); together, Tlalnepantla means The middle earth. In the XVI Century the Spanish franciscan friars came to Tlalnepantla to convert the otomies and mexicas (the original settlers) to Catholicism.

The second word, Baz, comes from the last name of Gustavo Baz Prada, an important politician and soldier in Emiliano Zapata's army during the Mexican Revolution. After the revolution, Baz Prada was Governor of the Estado de México (State of Mexico)and UNAM's Rector twice.

The modern city, in prehispanc and colonial times was an important religious center. At the end of the XI century, the old settlers in the Anahuac Valley, come to the north side in the actual Tlalnepantla's region searching better weather and lands.

The chichimeca's leader named Xolotl, found The Tenayuca's Impire, make the first census in America and between 1064 and 1116 a.C. build the Santa Cecilia and Tenayuca pyramids.

After the conquest,the Franciscans build a new temple, The Cathedral of Corpus Christi in 1550, builded in gray quarry the cathedral it's the way for spanish conquerors made the unification of Tlalnepantla.

In the Independence times, Tlalnepantla it's one of most important district from Mexico City. When Porfirio Díaz Mori was president of Mexico, Tlalnepantla start the industrial revolution, but in the 50's start the demographic explotion.

Tlalnepantla, today it's a big city very modern with an important mall "Mundo E" (World E) important hotels like: Crowne Plaza Lancaster, Camino Real, Fiesta Inn, NH hotel, The Holiday Inn and Best Western María Bárbara. In entertainment in Tlalnepantla City exist, for a family dining; The Punta Recoleta Restaurant (argentina food), Boca del Rio (mexican food), for dining and see a show Real de Catorce (mexican food), La Antigua (mexican food). For enjoy a mexican day you can visit the traditional restaurant Tacos el Paisa, the authentic taco specialist. If you want some fun, you can go to any of the night live atractives in Mundo E or in Plaza Satélite the most important mall in Mexico a few minutes of Tlalnepantla. The Rodeo Santa Fe, it's other option for dancers and to the young people, if you enjoy of sweet dance you can go to The Exxxcess a men's club or to the Dow Jons Club. You can go and try your good luck to the Big Bola or the Yak in Valle Dorado (The Golden Valley) For the family time, you can visit the Gustavo Baz square; and the Tenayuca's pyramid.
