Tjølling

Tjølling is a former municipality in Vestfold county, Norway.

On 1 January 1988 Tjølling was incorporated into the enlarged Larvik municipality.


In Tjølling you will also find Norway's and Scandinavia's oldest Viking settlement. Kaupang was a big tradeplace for the Vikings. Just reicently it was discovered that it was even more important than first thought. Archiologists have been very busy there the last few years. As a child growing up in the area we very often found arrows, jewerly and other things from the Viking age.

Vestfold is also known as the sunny holiday coast line..this is were people from other parts of the country spend their summerholidays. The coastline is a beautiful area...during the last ice age, this was were the end of the glacier polished the granite rocks making them smoth and without any sharp edges. Boat lovers often travel the fjords and spend time one the islands. Midsummer eve is a peak moment in Vestfold. Everybody move out to the beaches or into their boats and have barbiques, swim, playing games and await the grand finale at 12pm when bonfires are lit all around the coastline.
