Tirupur(Tamil: திருப்பூர்) is a city in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located in Coimbatore district, 50 kms east of Coimbatore and about 495 km south-west of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu.

Tirupur is the seventh largest city in Tamil Nadu and is one of the fastest developing cities in the state. Popularly referred to as "Dollar City" or "Small Japan" or Banian City" it excels in knitted ready-made garments.

The city is known for its hosiery exports and provides employment for about 6 lakh people (600,000). The population of Tirupur and surrounding villages is around 800,000. The nearest domestic airport is in Coimbatore. The nearest international airports are Kochi, Bangalore and Chennai airports. Kumaran road is the busiest road in city while Avinashi road & PN road are the primary arterial roads of the city.Tirupur stands second next to Chennai in number of Two Wheelers. The business district is located near the old bus terminal area, but it is slowly expanding to the north. Tirupur also has a railway station and two bus terminals. Tirupur is well connected by trains from Coimbatore, Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi and Trivandrum.

The climate is typically warm. The Noyyal river, on which the "Knit City - Tirupur" is located is right now ensuring steps in cleanliness and systematic growth. Some of the world's largest retailers including Walmart, Switcher, Diesel, ARMY, Tommy Hilfiger, M&S, FILA, H&M, Pink Lemonade, HTHP, Whale, Reebok, Heizzuer, PitStop, RESPECT import many textiles items and clothing from Tirupur. Though multinational corporations do not put restrictions on the pollution front, they force the small players to cut costs by dumping the untreated water into the river. Unlike the other cities in India, the pollution control board has imposed 0 Discharge from Dyeing factory in Tirupur alone.^{[citation needed]}

Even though the city is very prosperous, the infrastructure is very minimal. The city grew very quickly due to the high demand for manufacturing for the popular clothing brands mostly in the U.S. and Europe. But the modern machinery used and the availability of skilled labour enabled this city to prosper and be competitive internationally. There are also many players who are establishing their own brands and retailing concepts, for example T-Mart by PGC "an upper, mid middle class family concept." "Regency" is a growing brand catering to the upper and corporate segment and many local brands like Lux, Dixie, and VIP who cater to the undergarment market.

The local population is predominantly of the gounder community, who had become successful businessmen and exporters, In the last 20 years many people from southern districts and a small percentage from Kerela have settled as workers and in other trades.

The landmark of Tirupur is the Noyyal river which divides the city into two halves, the north and the south, The railway bridge over railway station, Tirupur Kumaran memorial statue near railway station.

Some of the famous places of Tirupur area "Khaderpet," a wholesale market for the seconds (export rejected) banian (undershirt) pieces.

The central business district of Tirupur was Kamaraj road and areas around old bus stand in the 1980s, Now it has moved to Kumaran road & parts of Avinashi road & PN road near the railway station. In the future it is expected to move further north and Avinashi road becoming CBD.^{[citation needed]}

New Tirupur is a world class textile city developed by the Textile Association. Tirupur also has other big industries like the Prem group of companies or PGC INDUSTRIES (www.premgrouyps.org), Eastman exports (www.eastmanexports.com), SCM group, SP exports, Stallion Garments and many as such.It has also got Medium Players like "Regency Garments" (www.regencygarments.com) which caters to the very specific niche market & corporate segment.

It is also the home to the growing major corporate supplier such as T-Mart (www.tmartindia.com), Benchmount, "Regency" etc., Tirupur manufacturers for major brands and also has a growth that of 40% aprox. per year since 1990. One of the largest girls school in South Asia is located here. Jaivabai Girls Higher Secondary School is located on Kumaran Road and has more than 5500 students. There are also really good schools in Tirupur like the Kathiravan Matric Hr.Sec School, Little Flower Convent Mat. Hr.Sec School, JMHS school, Vivekananda school, T.E.A Public School which is run by the T.E.A (Tirupur Exporters Association). The Prem Switcher Free Schools run by PGC Industries (PremDurai Exports) with the Durai Charatable Trust educating 1500 students per year with 7 schools, free water supply and health care facilities is also activated and run yet in Tirupur with is free. Tirupur is also known for its companies which have achieved major certificates and is showing an average growth of 40% per year since 1990.^[1]

Apart from booming development, the health condition of the people here is also taken care by many NGOs such as CBDC - Common Business Developmet Council in providing free medical treatment for many of the diseases like asthma, bronchitis, and sleeplessness which ensures a helathy environment leading to a healthy society.

The city also has the Junior Chamber International - Chapter, where the Individual Growth & development is taken care of its members & it organises many training & motivational classes for the booming leaders & Entreprenurs.

TEA (Tirupur Exporter's Association) has achieved major progress in water pipe line , exports promotion , Netaji Apparel Park (Biggest Apparel Park in India) , School , etc.,
