Tino Sehgal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tino Sehgal. born 1976, dancer, choreographer, performance artist. After studying political economy in Berlin and dance in Braunschweig, Tino Sehgal began his career as a dancer performing at a number of important venues includind "The Place" in London. Later he was invited to do a performance in a museum where he was taken up by a German gallerist. He has since exhibited at a number of important venues including the Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Tate gallery and the Venice Biennale

The work of Tino Sehgal exists only in the moment of its realisation. Imagine entering a room in a museum of modern art. The room is empty but for an immobile attendant with a fixed gaze. Suddenly this attendant starts to perform a strange dance during a few minutes and then stands perfectly still again. The puzzled or perplexed onlooker, on entering the next room, sees another attendant come into action and also performing all kinds of strange motions, ending the performance by saying calmly: "Tino Sehgal. This exhibition. (year). Courtesy of the artist". The motions of these attendants IS the actual work of art, an ephemeral art lasting only as long as the performance.

Because the artist is not interested in producing material objects, his work is not documented in any way. He currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
