The storyline focuses on the relationship that develops between two entirely opposite personalities. Costner plays golf driving range pro Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy, a perenniel frat boy whose future does not seem to extend past his next beer. Russo portrays Dr. Molly Griswold, whose current "gig" is as a clinical psychologist in Salome, a back-water West Texas town where McAvoy's driving range is located. Molly comes to Roy for golf lessons because her boyfriend is a golfer. Roy is attracted to her, but she sees through his charming "crapola" and makes a show of resistance. However, in time, she falls for his uncomplicated and true heart.

Much of the film takes place at a fictional U.S. Open golf tournament, and several pro golfers make cameo appearances.

The riddle Costner poses (and Russo solves) at the beginning of the movie has been traced back as far as at least the Cosby Show.
Kevin Costner is shown at times drinking Shiner Bock beer. The beer was also shown in another Kevin Costner movie, Fandango.
When filming at the Tubac Golf Resort in the Arizona desert, the script called for a water hazard. Since there were none on the course the filmmakers built one and named it "Tin Cup Lake."
Many of the golf shots by Kevin Costner's character were actual shots by Costner himself.
The scene at the end of the movie where Kevin Costner hits the shot into the water hazard again and again was based on an actual event. Gary McCord (the commentator with the handlebar mustache in the movie) is an actual commentator and pro on the Champions Tour. In a tournament he had a similar shot to Costner's. He needed a birdie to win and went for it. He shot over and over again and finally got it in 15 strokes. In the movie Costner gets it in 12.
Kevin Costner trained extensively with Gary McCord to learn how to play golf, as stated in the foreword he wrote for Gary's book, Golf For Dummies.
The grandparents and grandchild with a dog in the scene where Simms yells at them after asking for an autograph are played by Kevin Costner's parents, Sharon and Bill Costner. The grandchild is played by his son, Joe Costner.
Much of the film was shot in Kingwood, Texas, USA.
