Time on (Australian rules football)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Time on in Australian Football League (AFL) is the portion of each quarter allocated for extra play which could not occur due to time being stopped. Each quarter goes for a specific length (which can vary in different forms of the game, but generally 20 minutes). Each incidence of the umpires stopping play is noted, but not reflected on the time clock.

When the clock reaches the set duration of the quarter, all portions of time where play were not permitted are added, resulting in the fans not knowing how long a quarter will last for. This can make for tense finishes to AFL games, a good example being Sydney's win in the 2005 Grand Final.
