Timberlea, Nova Scotia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Timberlea (broad meadow in a forest), was referred to euphemistically, in the 1800s... as,"Bowser's Station", after Angus Bowser, who operated a Hotel next door to a Train Station... not far from Greenwood Heights, Subdivision. The name, Timberlea, is an Anglicisation of an earlier MicMaq word of the same definition, coined by the Fraser Family, early Settlers in the Community, who ran a SawMill, Logging Company, and Farm there. Aubrey Fraser, his Father and Brothers, stationed a SawMill along the Nine Mile River very close to present day, St. Andrew's Anglican Church. Almost a decade following the Halifax Explosion, the Bowser's Hotel was sold to Mr. and Mrs. William Miller. It had been a frequent stop for people travelling along the St. Margaret's Bay Road, between Halifax and Yarmouth. The Hotel was leveled in a fire, on the night of December 12th, 1947. Some of the Oldest residents in the Community, are the Frasers, the Fitzgeralds (Fitzgerald's Grocery), the Boutiliers, the Weadons, and the Heckmans.

The area is developing residentially; the population growing, steadily - one of the reasons for recent complaints of vandalism among young people. Many residents are naturally concerned over issues concerning conservation of the area's lush and fragrant vegetation, and scenic Lakes and Rivers... since these are the origins of the word: "Timberlea". Serious discussions are in progress over Preserving a substantially large area of crown land for a Community walking, hiking, and athletic park, around the Lakes.

Tentative plans are being discussed over the prospect of a Community Library, and construction and Restoration of a "Fraser's Mill Museum", which would be similar to the Mill in Sherbrooke Village, Nova Scotia... and an interesting landmark for Tourists.

There are at least Four Denominary Churches in the Area. Approximately 16 - 22% of the Population are of Hebrew denomination. Other Religions, such as Hindu and Muslim, are represented among it's population, also. The area contains approximately 3 Public Schools and a Music School - 'Harmony School of Music' (Mr. Harry Rheinders) - a Dutch resident.

It is the home of nationally renowned "Timberlea Titans" football program, a "Timbit's" soccer league, and TASA - Tantallon and Surrounding Areas/ Hockey. Softball & Baseball are favourite community activiies."
