Martin began his college career at UC Berkeley but after one year transferred to Fresno State where he captained the team and earned honors as Big West player of the year, made Big West and Far West Regional First Teams and NCAA First Team All-American. After college, Tim played in the USISL. As a four-year member of the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks he was voted USISL Defender of the Year and went on to play for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and the Atlanta Ruckus of the A-League where he was voted to the USISL All-Star team (1996). When MLS came on the scene in 1996, Tim was taken by the San Jose Clash as a third-round draft pick.
Tim Martin played four years in the MLS; three with San Jose, (earning Defender of the Year in his first year) and one with the Colorado Rapids. As well, Martin earned two caps with the U.S. National Team, one in 1994 in a game vs. the Cayman Islands, and again in 1996 vs. Peru. At 5'11" and 166 lbs, Tim was a solid defender who excelled at reading the opposing offense as plays developed.
Tim retired after a final year with the San Francisco Bay Seals of the USL, joining former teammates and professional friends in a great send-off year. He makes his home in the Bay Area and as a co-founder of USAseventeen Academy, coaches aspiring youth players. As a coach and trainer, Tim has one of the most outstanding records for winning in the youth side and for developing players who have moved on to the college game. He is also an assistant coach at Santa Clara University and enjoys having trained and developed several players who have now moved into the MLS.
