I created this article today as a spin-off from Shakespeare's reputation, which is getting long. Please add to it, especially at both ends! It's fairly fat around the middle, but at this moment it only goes from 1668 to 1841. [edit] Tolstoy on Shakespeare

When the article is brought up to date with more recent historical periods, Tolstoy's opinion should be mentioned. See Tolstoy as cited, e.g., by George Orwell in his essay, found at http://whitewolf.newcastle.edu.au/words/authors/O/OrwellGeorge/essay/leartolstoyfool.html :

... [Tolstoy] saying that throughout life Shakespeare has aroused in him ‘an irresistible repulsion and tedium’.

Tolstoy had (much) more to say about Shakespeare. But that is a good starting point.
