Tiled is a general purpose tile map editor. It has a very simple and easy to use interface, and is capable of outputting tile maps in a variety of formats, such as its own XML-based format, TMX, which can utilize gzip compression, or a Mappy compatible format (via a plugin). It is being developed in Java, so that it is immediately usable via the web, or to be downloaded on any Java capable platform. As of version 0.6.1, its feature set includes:

  • Orthogonal or isometric maps.
  • XML and JSON based file formats, including support for Base64, and gzip encoded data.
  • Supports all graphics formats supported by the JVM (including BMP, GIF, and PNG).
  • Layer handling including opacity and merging.
  • Multiple tilesets with offsets for global tile IDs.
  • Zooming in and out
  • Efficiently copying blocks of tiles around

Tiled is in use by several projects, including an open source 2D MMORPG called The Mana World and a remake of the Amiga game Skweek, called Freeeq. A fork of Tiled is being used for the game Stendhal.
