Tignanello

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tignanello is a red wine from Tuscany, Italy made by Marchesi Piero Antinori. Since 1982 it is made from Sangiovese (85%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) and Cabernet Franc (5%) grapes.

Historically important, in 1971 Tignanello became the second "Super-Tuscan" wine after the winemaker decided to alter the blend, lessening the amount of white grapes in violation of the Chianti rules. After this the wine had to be sold as lowly Vino da tavola in spite of its high quality. By 1975 the white grapes were eliminated altogether, and the blend has remained the same since 1982.

The Chianti Classico DOCG requirements have since been changed, and it would now be possible for Antinori to sell the wine again as Chianti. Yet they have decided against this, and so Tignanello remains an IGT wine.
