Thyholm
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thyholm is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Ringkjøbing County on the island of Vendsyssel-Thy, a part of the Jutland peninsula in northwest Denmark. The municipality includes the island of Jegindø, and it covers an area of 76 km². It has a total population of 3,577 (2005). Its mayor is Peter Gade, a member of the Conservative People's Party (Det Konservative Folkeparti) political party.
The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Hvidbjerg.
Thyholm's only neighboring municipalitiy with land connection is Sydthy to the north. The municipality is located on Thyholm, a peninsula connected to Sydthy by a very narrow stretch of land and road, ca. 1.5 km long and .5 km wide. Except for this narrow land connection Thyholm is surrounded by the waters of the Limfjord, which separates the island of Vendsyssel-Thy on which Thyholm is located from the Jutland peninsula to the south. These waters define most of the municipality's borders:
- To the north is Skibsted Fjord and Nissum Bredning, which separate most of Thyholm at the north from municipal neighbor Sydthy.
- To the east and northeast is Kås Bredning, which separates Thyholm from the island municipality Morsø, its neighbor to the northeast. The municipality's island Jegindø lies just off Thyholm's east coast in these same waters, and is connected by road to the mainland.
- To the south is neighboring municipality Struer which is separated from east to west by the waters of Venø Bay (Venø Bugt) to the southwast, the Odde Strait (Oddesund) directly south, and Nissum Bredning to the southwest.
Struer municipality's island Venø lies to the southwest of Thyholm.
The 472 meter long Oddesund Bridge (Oddesundbro) connects the municipality at the town of Oddesund Nord to the town of Oddesund Syd in Struer municipality.
The municipality was created in 1970 due to a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that combined a number of existing parishes:
- Hvidbjerg Parish
- Jegindø Parish
- Lyngs Parish
- Odby Parish
- Søndbjerg Parish
By January 1, 2007 Thyholm municipality will cease to exist, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Struer municipality to form the new Struer municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 248 km² and a total population of 22,752 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Midtjylland ("Mid-Jutland Region").
