Thwaite Hall

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thwaite Hall is the traditional hall of residence belonging to the University of Hull.

It is situated in the village of Cottingham, just outside Hull. It consists of 187 rooms and includes a junior common room, a TV room, games room, library and senior common room. Thwaite Hall has 24 acres of beautiful grounds. There is a warden, Dr David Sands, deputy warden and three student tutors who make up the staff.

It is renowned for accepting alternative students; it is home to a large variety of ethnicities as well as a vibrant chapter of the university's Lesbian, Gay and Transgender Society. Special-needs students are encouraged to mix in with the general population.

Students are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of activities organized by the JCR or Junior Common Room council. These include dances, sports, and a debate society. In recent years, the JCR has organised a flamboyant "Thwaite Pride" day during April, where people are encouraged to celebrate themselves regardless of sexuality or ethnicity.

There was once a JCR president called Darren Grainger who ran for University president, but lost as he was renomwned for his positive attitude towards less advantaged individuals; many of whom thought he was rude and unsympathetic.

Michael Rourke (his successor) has done a sturdy job in the latest year, but has failed to create the community atmosphere and has had a reputation for party animal.

The new elected president is known as sweaty Tim and is rumoured to have bathed in pure vegetable oil
