Thurstonland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thurstonland is a small rural village in the administrative area of Kirklees Metropolitan Council and Holme Valley Parish Council. It is within the Postal district of Huddersfield (HD4), in West Yorkshire.

It is situated on a hilltop above Brockholes and to the southeast of Farnley Tyas and south of Shepley. It has a, a Junior School, Church and a village cricket club. The village pub closed in January 2006, but is now open again.

Thurstonland Cricket Club is situated to the rear of the village Junior School, which is across a small rural road from the church.

Its most famous inhabitant in recent times was undoubtedly Kenneth Cliffe (nicknamed 'Tut-Tut' because of his stammer). He died in the late 90s, but lived in Thurstonland for approximately 60 years, in a 3-storey weaver's cottage that remained pretty much unchanged in all the time he lived there. He existed like what can only be described as a tramp with a house and was a source of fascination and amusement for generations of children and grown-ups alike.
