[edit] History

Thung Khru was split off from Rat Burana, announced on 14 October 1997, effective on 6 March 1998. The district name came from Kwaeng Thung Khru one of its two sub-districts that were part of Rat Burana. Thung is a Thai word mean flat land while khru has several meanings. It is speculated that khru here stands for a kind of utensil woven and coated for water transport, hence an indication that the area was once famous for the handicraft. Now it is well known for its Bang Mot tangerines (Thai ส้มบางมด). Note that both Thung Khru and Chom Thong district contain sub-districts named Bang Mot so each gets a share of the tangerine reputation.
