[edit] History

Thunder Bay Transit began as two railway systems in the cities of Port Arthur and Fort William Ontario, in the mid 1890s.

The Port Arthur Street Railway commenced operations in 1892 and extended it's operations to the nearby city of Fort William in 1893. It sold the Fort William section to the city of Fort William in 1908. Both systems were operated by a joint commission until 1913, under the name Port Arthur and Fort William Railway. The name was changed to Port Arthur Civic Railway in 1914, when Fort William assumed control of street cars in that city.

Electric trolley buses were introduced in 1947, and a year later the Electric Streetcars were discontinued. The service was renamed Port Arthur Transit until 1 January 1970, the day Port Arthur and Fort William amalgamated into Thunder Bay. Since then, the system has been known as Thunder Bay Transit. [1] Trolleys were discontinued in 1972, since then the city has used diesel buses.

Since 02 March 2007, Thunder Bay Transit has been 100% wheel chair accessible. Their next goal is to have all buses air conditioned by the end of Summer 2007.[2]
