Throwball
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Throwball is a ball game, popular in Asia, with a basic set-up like volleyball, i.e., the set-up of the field with a limiting rectangle and net in between. Each team consists of nine players and two substitutes. Usually, a game consists of 15 points but it could go longer, if already decided at the beginning of the game. Nine players arrange themselves in horizontal lines of three, to occupy their side of the court.
Some basic concepts of throwball:
- Service: The person occupying the extreme right position in the last line, is responsible for the service, which is essentially throwing the ball positioning oneself behind the limiting line. Until the ball reaches the other court in mid-air, one is not allowed to cross the limiting line. The person in charge of the service at that time, is not allowed to change positions until the ball has reached the opposite side. If the player does, it is declared a foul. Also, while serving, one foot has to be rooted to the ground. Jumping during service to push the ball further is not allowed.
- Under arm service: Sometimes, people are at ease throwing the ball farther by pushing it from their torso level. This is not allowed. The right way to serve is to propel the ball forward by placing the hand in level with the ear, almost making a 30 degree angle and then throwing or releasing the ball; pushing the ball upward and forward.
- Double touch: When a player tries to catch the approaching ball, there are possibilities that the player can lose grip over the ball but regains it. This act of gripping the ball twice is a foul. The ball has to be controlled fully in the first attempt of catching.
- Full turn: Due to the speed and direction of the ball, while catching it, the player is forced to turn around. If the player turns around in a 360 degree turn, it is a foul. One should make sure that if they turn, they should maintain that position and throw the ball to the opposite team in the same position.
- Body touch: While catching the ball, if the ball comes in contact with any body part except the palms, it is a foul.
