[edit] Launch & Aims

ThreeWeeks was founded in Edinburgh in 1996 by three then Edinburgh University students, Chris Cooke, Geraint Preston and Alex Thomson. The primary aim was to provide comprehensive coverage of the ever growing Edinburgh Festival, and in particular the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with a specific focus on the grass roots artists, performers and theatre companies that were not being covered by the mainstream media. A secondary aim was to provide an on-the-ground media training programme for Edinburgh based students, who would form the paper's review team.

[edit] Edinburgh

Now run by UnLimited Media, the London based media company run by Chris Cooke and Caroline Moses, ThreeWeeks is run as a not-for-profit venture with the same two aims as in 1996.

Each year a team of over 80 students are recruited from all of the UK via UnLimited's College Media Network. They attend a training course, and then form the ThreeWeeks review team. Between them they review over 1250 shows at the Edinburgh Festival. Their reviews are published in a weekly newspaper and daily reviews sheet, both available for free and distributed all over Edinburgh. The reviews are also available via a daily email newsletter and on the ThreeWeeks website.

ThreeWeeks now provides by far the most comprehensive coverage of the Edinburgh Festival, reviewing hundreds more shows than any other media (meaning hundreds of shows at the Edinburgh Fringe would be unreviewed without ThreeWeeks). The ThreeWeeks project also provides a great opportunity for participating students.

Over the years ThreeWeeks has also launched other spin-off ventures, including a radio show on Edinburgh Festival radio station Festival FM, podcast and mobile services and an annual awards initiative called the ThreeWeeks Editor Awards.

2007 will be the 12th consecutive year ThreeWeeks has covered the Edinburgh Festival

[edit] Brighton

In 2006 ThreeWeeks launched at the Brighton Festival, providing similar coverage of that festival, this time with a team of Brighton students. This coverage was available via a weekly magazine distributed inside Brighton magazine Latest 7, as well as online.
