The Thousand Sunny (サウザンドサニー号 Sauzando Sanī-gō?), which Franky intended to be named the "New Battle Franky, "The Lion Gang Champion""[1], is a fictional brigantine-rigged sloop-of-war (brig sloop) used by the Straw Hat Pirates in the anime and manga One Piece from chapter 436 to present. The name Thousand Sunny was proposed by Iceburg and adopted by the Straw Hats, despite Franky's objection.

[edit] History
After the events at Enies Lobby, Franky felt morally obligated to repay the Straw Hat Pirates for their trouble and also for stealing their 200 million Belli money. With the assistance of Iceburg and the Galley-La foremen, Franky built a new ship from the wood of the Treasure Tree Adam, the same wood that the late Pirate King Gol D. Roger's ship, Oro Jackson, was built from. Aside from assisting the Straw Hats, Franky built this "Dream Ship" to fulfill his dream to build a ship that would travel the world and reach the end of the Grand Line. Iceburg stated that since Luffy's dream is to become the Pirate King, then he should sail on the Thousand Sunny, which carries a lion motif as the "King of the Beasts." [2] The name comes from the idea that the ship will cross over a thousand seas like the sun.
Franky stated that the Thousand Sunny will carry on the Going Merry's spirit, possibly hinting that he included some of Merry's scrap and put it into Sunny. This indeed came true as the ship now contains a mini-Merry supply ship designed to carry four people.
[edit] Features
On this his dream ship, Franky included a number of interesting features. As a ship built to aid the Pirate King and find the way to the end of the Grand Line, the vessel includes among other things:
- A near-indestructible keel made of Adam Wood (same material used to build Gol D. Rogers ship)
- A pond for storing fish (Aquarium below deck), with glass walls for viewing through the lounge
- A Soldier Dock System, an invention of Franky's that involves a rotating wheel with six compartments, which is mounted in the center of the ship horizontally. Each individual compartment has its own door, allowing deployment of whatever that is within the compartments. There are five different channels for the Soldier dock system: 1, 2, 3, 4 and two 0's.
- Soldier Dock System, Channel 0 contains two large cola-powered paddle wheels within two opposite compartments that extend out to propel the ship while the sails are tied up; In this configuration, the ship is called 'Paddle Ship Sunny'.
- Soldier Dock System, Channel 1 releases a one-person Waver, Shiromokuba I. When the Thousand Sunny's doors are closed, they display Channel 1, possibly in homage to Dock 1 of the Galley-La Company.
- Soldier Dock System, Channel 2 releases a supply ship, the Mini-Merry II, a paddle steamer that resembles Going Merry and allows four people to travel on it.
- Soldier Dock System, Channel 3 releases a 3-person scout submarine, the Shark Submerge III.
- Soldier Dock System, Channel 4 is as-yet unused, but Franky plans to put some sort of weapon in that slot further along their travels.
- A lawn on the deck for growing Nami's trees, and other gardening.
- A refrigerator with a lock (something Sanji has long desired, due to Luffy's enormous superhuman appetite).
- A gigantic oven.
- A slide
- A swing hanging from a tree.
- Paws that serves as anchors, much like those of the Sexy Foxy used by Foxy the Silver Fox.
- A giant version of Franky's "Coup de Vent" cannon on the back called "Coup de Burst", that can launch the ship over a kilometer through the air using 3 barrels of cola.
- A large sauna/bathhouse at the stern of the ship.
- A large sick bay.
- A large, enclosed crow's nest
