Thornhill High School

The Community Science College @ Thornhill is situated just outside Dewsbury, West Yorkshire on the western side of Kirklees LEA (Huddersfield). It is within easy access of both the M1 and the M62. The college serves both the urban and rural areas of Dewsbury and draws from the village of Thornhill, Thornhill Lees, Ravensthorpe and Savile Town. It is a mixed comprehensive with currently 769 pupils on roll. Over the past three years the number on roll has continued to grow.
A major building programme, which began in May 2002, is now complete and has seen investment of £4.2M under the Public Private Partnership Initiative. This work involved a complete upgrade of all college buildings including brand new areas in Design Technology, Creative and Expressive Arts, Humanities and a new Learning Resource Centre. A new Sports Hall is currently being built; it is expected to be completed by May 2007.
Every department has its own designated specialist suited teaching area. The college has:
- Five new Technology rooms
- A Music Suite and Dance/Drama Studio both fully equipped with the latest technologies
- Six Science Laboratories and a Science Resource Centre
- Two new I.C.T Suites
- Two art Studios
- A new area for Modern Foreign Languages with study room
- A new Humanities block
- A Global Laboratory with the latest “high spec” technologies
- A thorn center with newly refirbished I.C.T room
- A comprehensive and up to date Learning Resource Centre
- An established Inclusion Unit
- A suited English floor with its own newly referbished ICT Suite
- A Maths floor with its own Maths Resource Centre
- In addition to the Sports Hall, a gym, P.E. classroom, tennis courts, a brand new MUGA (multi use games area) and extensive playing fields
