Thorner

Thorner is a village near Wetherby, West Yorkshire not far away from the A1, A58 and A64 main roads. It is 13km (8m) north-east of Leeds city centre and 11km (7m) to the south-west of Wetherby.

Travel to and from the village by public transport is easy via the 770 bus route (operated by the Harrogate & District bus company). The journey takes roughly half an hour from Leeds and an hour from Harrogate.

The village appears in the Domesday Book as "Torneure" which probably means "thorn tree". The Thorner parish area used to include the nearby villages of Scarcroft and Shadwell. Thorner is also noted for having no street lighting.

Notable events include the Raise the Roof campaign held in order to raise funds to replace the roof of the Victory Hall. The campaign comprises many events annually of which the two most noticeable are the Beer Festival and the Festival of Comedy - recent acts have included internationally renowned comedians such as Alan Carr and Rich Hall.
