Thomas Point Shoal Light
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Thomas Point Shoal Light is a historic lighthouse in the Chesapeake Bay on the east coast of the United States, and the most recognized lighthouse in Maryland.
It was built in 1825 on the Thomas Point shoal at the South River entrance to the Chesapeake Bay in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It is currently maintained by the United States Coast Guard. The original light was built in 1825 fifteen years later in 1840 they would redo the light house and modernize it. Then finally in 1875 the lighthouse we see today was built in the screw pile style.
It is a screwpile lighthouse, with a wooden cottage structure. The present optic is a 250 mm solar-powered lens. It also has an electric foghorn.
It is not open to the public, but a water tour operates several times daily (in season) from Annapolis, Maryland. It is listed on the National Register of historic landmarks.
