[edit] Information
Thomas Haney Secondary School is a self-directed learning school, permitting the students to take responsibility in their own pace of learning. Although a shift towards traditional structure has been seen in recent years, the school remains unique in the district. While the benefits of accelerated learning can enhance the education of some students, it has been proven that others struggle with a non-traditional program, and may take additional time to finish. Motivation is key to the success of the student. Classes remain on a part-time basis, allowing the student to work independently between classes.
Thomas Haney has had a history of distinctive programs available for students. Currently, a number of staff members have initiated programs such as Connections, a senior class incorporating mathematics, biology, social studies, English, and law. The primary goal is to establish a "real world" approach to these subjects inside and outside of the classroom in a non-traditional setting. Additionally, the Moodle Project has become prominent in its approach to technology. Its goal is a CMS Website system to collaborate online resources with teachers and students, something similar to Online Learning.
