Thomas Garnier

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Garnier, (1776-1873), was Dean of Winchester (1840-1872) and a botanist.

He was educated at Winchester College and Worcester College, Oxford. He was appointed Rector of Bishopstoke, Hampshire in 1807.

Whilst Dean, he was a founding member of the Hampshire Horticultural Society in 1818 (Dean Garnier's Garden in Winchester's cathedral close is named after him) and, in the 1860s, an 'anti-muckabite' campaigner for a sewage system for Winchester (with the road to the pumping station later being named after him).

He was a friend of Palmerston and a staunch whig.

His son, also called Thomas Garnier, was Dean of Lincoln from 1860-1863. His great-great-great-grandson, Martin Tod, is a Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate.
